As of 31 March 2018, all new types of cars in the European Union will have to be equipped with eCall. Once installed in a vehicle, this technology dials automatically the European emergency number 112 in case of a severe accident and sends crucial data to the emergency services, such as the precise location of the incident.
What will be the impact of eCall?
It is estimated that eCall will speed up emergency response times by 40% in urban areas and 50% in the countryside, which will result in reducing the number of fatalities by at least 4% and severe injuries by 6% according to the European Commission.
